Baby Photos - Tips and Tricks for the Best Baby Photo

October 22nd, 2007

Babies - They Are All Cute and Cuddly

Every baby is cute and can take a great baby photo, but their are some important tips you can use to make a baby’s picture turn out as cute as possible. Some of the key tips to think about when taking a baby photo:

  • Get down to the baby’s level, don’t shoot from above
  • Make sure baby has plenty of rest. A tired baby is a crabby baby.
  • Babies move around a lot and are faster than you think. So make sure that you use high speed film if using a traditional camera for your baby photo, or a digital camera with a fast shutter speed and good image stabilization features

Baby Photos from the Baby’s Point of View

Baby photos look the best when they are full of baby not background. Therefore it is always the best idea to kneel down to the babies level and try to zoom in the camera to take the best possible baby photo. Pictures from up above don’t show the baby in the best angle. By kneeling down and looking at the baby as straight on as possible the pictures look more life like and you can zoom in much easier. Also, focusing on the baby with the camera instead of focusing on the background can help to really make the baby “pop” out of the photo.

Baby - Cute or Crabby?

Babies’ moods can change quicker than their diapers! So catching a baby in a good mood can be harder than it may seem. However it is usually worth the wait. Great baby photos are of babies which are smiley or full of mischief. Catching them in the act is trick. Babies aren’t uncooperative to spite grown-ups. They usually have a good reason. Children in general and babies especially, tend to act grumpy and temperamental when they are tired, hungry, or bored.

Taking photos of a crabby aby can easily be prevented. Make sure to only attempt to take pictures of a well rested, recently fed, entertained baby. You can accomplish this by shooting your baby photos shortly after a meal. Babies first foods make sweet baby photos, as do their creative applications of said food. Bath time is another great photo opportunity. They are certainly entertained and often having a great time. Finding a baby in a good mood isn’t always a challenge but having the camera ready when it happens can be.

Sleeping babies also make for great pictures. The angelic look on their faces, the odd positions they may be comfortable in, and the fact that they usually won’t turn their face or move as soon as a good shot is lined up, makes for very adorable baby photos. These sleeping baby photos are often parent’s favorites and grand parent’s favorites as well.

Baby Photos - Using a Digital Camera

Digital cameras can be a great tool for taking baby photos. They make it easier to see exactly what picture was taken. Then the photographer is quickly able to decide if the picture is worth keeping. Additionally taking digital photos, uploading them to the internet and having them made in to photo books can help even the busiest parents make adorable keepsake scrapbooks of all their favorite baby photos. Once the books are ordered all the creative parent need to is add the stickers and other fun decorations, and hours of potential work is turned into an hour of so of fun.

Spending your time playing with baby, and trying to make sure baby is having a fun time, will lead to the cutest baby photos. You can be assured that your baby will almost always be doing something that you will want to capture, so it is extremely important to try to keep your camera with you all the time. Remember that the best and cutest baby photo opportunities will come when you least expect it. So enjoy your baby and enjoy your baby photos!

HOW TO: Take Adorable Photos Of Your Pet!

October 16th, 2007

While great pet photography is an art like anything else, if you master these tips you can create photo stories your whole family will talk about for years to come.

Tip #1: You can’t get a ’staged’ photo

The first thing to remember is that Fido, Fluffy or Tweetie may not pose exactly like you want - unless you simply want them to sit and look at the camera. While posed shots have their place as records of important moments or events, it’ll take a little more work to create photo stories of your pet you’ll truly cherish. But the effort you put in will be well worth it.

Tip #2: Get down to their level

In one respect, pets are like kids. They’re all over the place, they fidget and rarely, if ever, keep still. So it helps to get down to their level. No, that doesn’t mean making funny faces or acting a bit foolish. What is does mean is getting down on the floor in order to take the best photograph. Basically, you wan to be eye-to-eye with your pet — whether he’s relaxing on the sofa or on top of the picnic table.

When you do you’ll have be able to share memories of your pet in some of their most natural poses!

Tip #3: ‘Go below’

If it’s at all possible, try to take pictures of your pet from a perspective that’s below them - get underneath their normal line of sight. This will make for an unusual and intriguing shot and create photo stories no one will ever forget! You’ll have fun for many years as you share memories of these moments.

Tip #4: Be quiet!

You never want to startle or alarm your pet. So try not to make any sudden movements or loud noises that might frighten your best friend. This is especially important when you’re sneaking up on him while he’s playing with a ball or rolling around on the floor.

Tip #5: Bring out the performer in him!

This is very different than actually trying to get your pet to pose. The fact is, many cats or dogs will actually perform tricks for certain family members they are comfortable with. And they’ll do it on command. If you can capture one of these moments, you’ll share memories that will be special and quite hilarious!

Tip #6: Keep your pet’s personality in mind

If you’re struggling for some good ideas, why not concentrate on your pet’s personality or his features? What makes him special or endearing? He may love to sleep on his back in a funny way? Or he may love jump real high when waiting for a treat. Or he may have unique eyes or an unusual color.

The point is, you know your pet’s best attributes. Capture them with your camera and create photo stories so you can share memories in the years ahead.

Tip #7: Put yourself (or a child) into the photograph

In the great scheme of things, people and pets go hand in hand, especially children. Who can resist a little kid and a pet?

While solitary shots are perfectly good, you can add real excitement and drama by creating contrasts and contradictions. Small children and big animals or big men with a small dog or cat will make everyone smile…and create photo stories that are truly special!

Tip #8: Avoid flash photography

Again, this is an easy one. It should be obvious that any type of flash may really frighten or alarm your pet. So it’s always best to shoot when the natural light is good. Besides, animals are prone to red eye and eliminating the flash and using natural light is a great way to end the red eye effect!

Tip #9: Be prepared!

Let’s face it - getting the perfect shot of your family pet involves luck, being in the right place at the right time. So be prepared at all times. You never know when that precious moment will occur. Catch them while they’re sleeping or munching on a snack.

Oh, and don’t try for the perfect shot. Just have fun. That’s one of the biggest secrets to being able to share memories and create photo stories of your pets!

Digital photography for fun and profit…

October 16th, 2007

But mostly profit! I used to work in the editorial desk of a medium size newspaper, and while writers and reporters were a dime a dozen, the one thing that was always in short supply were - photos! Many’s the time I can remember the grumpy old news editor (I can still smell that cigar smoke!) screaming for a photo of a big fire downtown or the hippies rioting (am I dating myself with that one ?!)

But now with mini digital cameras and camera phones, anyone who happens to be at the scene can make money taking photos and selling them to newspapers - or web sites, TV news, etc.

But here’s another little journalism secret: A good photo makes its own news story! Editors need to fill space with content, which is often not so easy to come by, believe it or not; a hometown newspaper needs hometown stories, and wire or photo services don’t usually have the kind of local human interest photos publications seek. So, if you’ve got a nice photo with an interesting background, that’s money in the bank too!
